Ullarverið

Ullarverið is located in the south part of Iceland, in the county Hrunamannahreppur.

Ullarverið is aiming to process Icelandic wool from farmers and other people in the area. The final product will depend on what the buyer wishes.

Our goal is to create a wool processing line that can process small amount of wool for each person. Either producing carded wool or spun yarn.

Icelandic wool

For over 1,100 years of exposure to the sub-Arctic climate the Icelandic wool has evolved. The Icelandic wool has a distinctive combination of inner and outer fibers keeping the Icelandic sheep warm and dry.

The outer fibers (Tog) are long, glossy, tough and water-resistant, while the inner fibers (þel – thel) are fine, soft, and insulating, providing great breathability and high resistance to cold.

Icelandic fleece is the most versatile of all breeds and is a hand spinner’s dream.

Authentic Icelandic Wool is free of any residues of pesticides and herbicides as their usage in sheep farming is unknown in Iceland.

Dual coated fleece

The specific gravity of Icelandic wool has been measured 12-15% lighter than other wool types.

Icelandic high-quality wool acts as an air purifier for both dust and harmful volatile organic compounds. It is flame resistant and does wonders in absorbing unwanted noise.

 The two coats are:

  • Tog:  is the soft strong long lustrous outer coat that provides wind, rain, and dust protection for the sheep. It has little crimp and hangs in loose curls.
The coarser fibers are above 36 microns and the length is from 13 to 18 cm or 5 – 7 inches.
  • Þel: is the soft under coat that keeps the sheep warm.
The finer fibers of the under coat are between 22 – 34 microns and the length is about 8 – 10 cm or 3-4 inches.
