Wool processing

One of the main goals of the Icelandic Woolmarket & Mill is to reduce waste and increase the utilization of wool as a raw material. By offering basic processing of wool such as worsted and summer wool, we are promoting a circular economy and maximizing the value of local resources.

The ideology

The basic idea is wool processing for individuals or small producers who want to use their own wool or obtain wool for crafts or the production of their own products. The final product of the Icelandic Woolmarket & Mill can vary greatly, some want to use the wool for spinning, others want to felt, and still others base the production of various products on wool as a raw material.

The Icelandic Woolmarket & Mill is intended to cater to this market with basic wool processing, wool washing, shredding, and carding.

Education and the dissemination of information will also be a major part of the operations. Courses and events related to wool processing will be available.

Services

Wool washing

The Icelandic Woolmarket & Mill accepts wool from individuals and small businesses for washing.

Two types of wool washing are available. On the one hand, washing very dirty winter wool and slubs. Then the wool is washed three times in very hot water with a good detergent.

However, autumn wool is washed at a much lower temperature and only once with soap.

Shredding

The wool mill is working on purchasing a wool shredder to be able to shred or open wool. The first stage of processing the wool will then be washing and shredding, and the wool can then be delivered for further processing.

Carding

The wool will be delivered in combs or skeins, depending on customer preferences.

Spun into a thread

The ultimate goal is to purchase spinning machines. Then it will be possible to deliver the wool finished into yarn.
